NON SURGICAL FACELIFTS - FACIAL COSMETIC SURGERY

We offer non surgical facelift procedures without surgery. The range of options with this type of treatment is vast, using a combination of botulinum toxins, fillers and chemical peels. In experienced and skilled hands, a combination of fillers and muscle relaxants can be used to lift the face, reduce jowls, iron out creases and rejuvenate the complexion of your skin. The more you want the better the result we can achieve, and for the ultimate facelift without surgery, you would have a combination of treatments to lift the face muscles, iron out fine lines and wrinkles, smooth out the jowls and nose to mouth lines, and refresh the skin. Down time for non surgical facelift treatment is a week if you have a chemical peel and a weekend if you have facial fillers and muscle relaxants only. Most non surgical, facial cosmetic treatments need topped up every few months but they can give a very effective rejuvenation result without the need for surgery. Mr Shoaib will be happy to discuss your suitability for non-surgical versus surgical techniques to help you achieve the look you're hoping to achieve.

Non Surgical Nose Jobs (Rhinoplasty)

We can also reshape the nose with fillers, as a non surgical nose job or rhinoplasty. This procedure involves injecting fillers into the deep part of the skin of the nose and molding the filler to smooth out the contours along the nose. We can fill out the tip, the bridge and the areas in between to give the nose a more pleasing appearance. In these cases, we cannot reduce the size of the nose, and for that we would often recommend a rhinoplasty operation. The advantage of seeing a plastic surgeon is that I can recommend things based on what's best for you rather than what I am limited to performing.

Chemical Peels

A chemical peel is a non surgical facial procedure to remove the top layer of dead skin cells and some of the living skin cells at the very top of your skin. There are several types of chemical peels but all peels remove the top layers of the skin, to reveal new skin underneath which grows back as a younger fresher skin. Some peels are thin and some peels are thick; thin peels are referred to as superficial peels, and thick peels are referred to as deeper peels. There are three general types of peels; superficial, intermediate and deep peels. All peels usually need to be repeated and all have the same side effects. Most peels will not remove all your skin damage but they should all make you look fresher for a while.

The most superficial peels are with substances such as glycolic acid and this is found in many over the counter preparations and peels performed by beauticians. These have a short recovery time and have a mild but noticeable effect which should last several weeks.

The intermediate peels are performed with trichloroacetic acid, or TCA as it is known. TCA peels can be concentrated or diluted according to how deep we want to go, and several layers of peel can be given to go a little deeper if necessary for your skin requirements. I usually use 20-30% for most people and use one to four passes depending on how much time you have to recover and what effect you are looking to achieve. The recovery time is a little longer than the more superficial peels but the effects are more dramatic and last longer. Peels of this strength need to be performed by a doctor, though some weaker solutions of TCA peels can be performed by nurses.

The deepest peels are performed using lasers and phenol. Phenol is generally no longer used because some of it is absorbed and can be toxic, but is very effective at giving a deep peel in those facilities that do not use lasers. Deep peels can be very effective for more intensive treatment requirements, but the recovery time is longer and there are more side effects to consider. Laser treatments should only be performed on the recommendation of a plastic surgeon (or dermatologist experienced in lasers).

Chemical peels are best used for treatment of mild to moderate skin problems. They work particularly well to restore sun damaged skin and can help with very fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes and lips. A peel can help restore evenness to your complexion and should freshen your skin and can remove some of the sun damaged areas of freckling around the cheeks. When performed as part of an overall package of care for facial rejuvenation it can be considered the icing on the cake for your overall look. We want you to look your best and sometimes a chemical peel will be part of your treatment recommendation.

A chemical peel using TCA can be performed in the out patient clinic and takes around 15 minutes. After the treatment someone should drive you home and you can perform your usual daily activities in shortly thereafter. During the application of the peel, you will feel a stinging sensation which is neutralised with water. After the peel is applied, your skin will become frosty white which is a good sign of the peel working.

The aftercare depends on the strength of treatment and the number of passes but usually involves the application of cold water for around 6 hours to the face via a face towel and moisturiser (eg Vaseline) thereafter for a few days until your skin stops peeling. After a few days you should notice some of the dead layer of the skin coming off in the Vaseline with fresher newer skin revealing itself below. A deeper TCA peel may need longer periods of skin care and more superficial peels will require less intensive aftercare. After your skin stops peeling and you stop using Vaseline you should go back to using your usual moisturizer.

Fillers

Fillers are injections of syringes that contain a substance called hyaluronic acid (or HA for short). HA is a naturally occurring substance that all animals have, and it is the same in every animal. HA forms an important structural component of your skin and supporting tissues, but as we get older the amount of HA and fat around our skin reduces. Fillers containing HA can be used to plump up the skin and provide lost volume to restore a youthful fullness.

There are different types of fillers available but I will only use HA injections. Other fillers remain in the body for too long a time period, and are more likely to cause infections, sometimes several years later. Skin doctors that give injections do not see complications many years later, but plastic surgeons do, and the complications we see are not worth the slight advantage of a longer lasting filler. The only permanent long lasting filler I will use is your own fat, in a fat transfer procedure, and please do discuss this at a consultation if you would like more information about this.

Fillers are excellent products to use for people who do not want more invasive treatment and they can also be used in people who have had, for example, a facelift and who want to maintain that look. Fillers can be used in combination with chemical peels and Botulinum toxins to achieve a complete non surgical facelift.

Muscle Relaxants

There are two types of fine lines that we have in our face: dynamic lines and static lines. Dynamic lines are those that appear when we make facial expressions and static lines are those that are present all the time.

Dynamic lines are often seen around the middle of the eyebrows (so called glabellar lines), around the outer areas of the eyes (crows feet lines), on the upper side wall of the nose (bunny lines) and on the forehead when we frown (forehead lines). Botulinum toxin often works well for these dynamic lines, reducing (not eliminating) the lines that we have in these areas.

The popular muscle relaxing injections available are all trademarks and prescription only medicines. This means we cannot inform you of their names on this web site but we can talk about wrinkle smoothing injections and botulinum toxins.

Botulinum toxins are used for dynamic lines, and the dose used depends on the area we are treating, whether you have had an effect from a previous dose before and what effect you are hoping to achieve. Botulinum toxin is given as an injection into the muscles that create wrinkles on the skin. By giving Botulinum toxin to these muscles, we can relax them and reduce the amount they move the skin. This way we can reduce dynamic lines.
